Research consistently shows that women without financial independence are significantly more vulnerable to exploitation, including human trafficking, forced labor, and domestic servitude. There is no single path into exploitation. Some girls are coerced into child marriage, some women are widowed or abandoned with no safe way to support their families, some enter sex work to keep their children fed, and others are deceived by promises of legitimate employment or trapped by debt they cannot repay. While every woman’s story is different, economic vulnerability and limited opportunities are common threads that traffickers exploit.
