Sudara Stories: Princy

We love sharing stories of the women who, as part of a skills-training program, sew together PUNJAMMIES®. The Sudara Stories series highlights a few of these strong, amazing women. Today, we are honored to introduce Princy.

Princy’s Story of Hope and Freedom

Princy loved everything about her childhood and schooling.  She describes her parents and four sisters as loving towards her and others. And, she looked forward to getting married and starting a family of her own. About two years after her wedding, though, her husband lost his job and they had to move in with her in-laws.

She isn’t sure when her in-laws started fighting, but they were arguing more and more each day — at first with each other and then with her and her husband. Princy’s father-in-law had always been an alcoholic, but he became violent as well and physically abused her.  Princy’s husband defended her each time, which angered her father-in-law even more. One evening, her in-laws told her that she is no longer welcome in their home.

Princy and her husband faced a difficult situation. He was still unable to find a stable job and their young daughter who would soon need to enroll in school. Her husband is also the oldest son and, culturally, his family expects him to stay with them. They decided to remain at her in-laws, but it’s a decision she struggles with each day.

Princy heard about Sudara’s partner sewing center through a neighbor.  She came to us with great hope for creating a new life for herself and her family  — a life that is free from the physical abuse she faces at home. Although her husband continues to look for a stable job, Princy is proud of the fact that her work at the sewing centers helps provide for her family and gives her daughter access to a good education, too.

Thank you for continuing to invest in and empower women like Princy to create a new life for herself and her family. Read more Sudara Stories here. And, find the PUNJAMMIES® we named in honor and celebration of Princy here.
