In India, women are often trafficked for various forms of exploitation, including sexual slavery, commercial sexual exploitation, forced marriages, organ extraction, and forced labor.
Human trafficking stands as the third largest organized crime globally. Since the pandemic, there has been an increase in trafficking cases in India. Victims endure severe abuse, exploitation, and conditions that can lead to mental health issues, physical harm, and diseases. Even after escaping, many survivors face further abuse and re-victimization.
The John Foundation, our partner organization in India, is actively supporting women at high risk of human trafficking through its initiatives. One of its key projects is the Employable Skills Training Center, designed to provide women with skills that can lead to employment and economic independence.
The center offers programs for women from high-risk backgrounds, including:
- Survivors of trafficking
- Survivors of temple prostitution
- Women and girls affected by HIV/AIDS
- Single mothers
- Widows
- Women from low-income families
The Foundation creates a nurturing environment, fostering a community of love, support, and encouragement. Recognizing that many women need additional support to heal from trauma, the center provides not only training but also compassionate care, professional counseling, a safe place to stay, nutritious food, and childcare and education for women with children.
This holistic approach helps women heal from their past and build hope for a self-sufficient future. By empowering them to make their own choices, the Foundation offers a variety of courses, including but not limited to:
- Basic and advanced computer courses
- Basic and advanced beautician courses
- Spoken English courses
- Tailoring and embroidery courses
- Paramedics courses
- Pre-primary teacher training courses
- All courses are recognized by the Government of Telangana, enhancing job prospects for graduates. Approximately 90% of students find dignified, fair-wage jobs after graduation, with many starting their own businesses. Nearly 90% of graduates achieve distinctions in their government exams.
Each woman who benefits from these programs is transforming her future, positively impacting her family and community, one step at a time.
